CoA: A Dwarven TaleThe younger maids gathered around Miriam, ready for a story. The older maid sat back in her wooden chair, a thoughtful look on her face, and began to recount a story she heard from her years in the dungeons:
"It was a dingy night and I was aiding this older gentleman - a dwarf I believe - with a nasty cough. After I recited my enchantments, I saw a very peculiar scar on his arm. I inquired about this scar and he gave me this very grave look. He scratched his beard and said, 'This was the bite of a demon.' His voice became more sullen and grim as he continued. 'I was out late, late one night on my way home through the forest. Despite the full moon, it wasn't even that bright and there was no stars so I soon lost my way. The the forest fell cold, dark, and quiet. I wandered for what felt like hours. Then a redish fog rolled in. There were cackles and shrieks from every which way. I pulled my knife out and called, 'Who's there?' But there was no answer. I started running, trying to
a dangerous hallucinationThe light coming through the window was bright,
much too bright.
Even though my eyes were closed
I could see it-
The skin of my arms prickled,
sweat dripped from my brow.
It was two in the afternoon but…
the sun was setting
through the window facing east.
I should have seen the hutch,
shelves lined with bone china
decorated with delicate leaves and vines.
I was so thirsty
and reaching for cups that should have been there.
Instead I found a billboard of butterflies,
the colors raging
more than any rainbow
I'd ever seen.
Their wings fluttered and flashed
yet somehow they moved in slow motion.
I wanted to stand,
wanted to reach out and touch them but…
I couldn't move,
and yet I laughed
ignoring my dry mouth
and the tingling in my feet.
There was a tempest
on the rise
and in my blood.
A sugar rush disguised
as a riot of butterflies
and they were swarming me.
There was a small vial
of insulin in my pocket
